Throughout the film, it’s evident that Tim loves studying bugs and fly design. Tim likes simple and effective flies, or guide flies as some know them. Because of this, his process of designing new flies is often guided by the question: How simple can a fly be and still catch fish? In fact, this process involves removing materials from existing patterns until he finds the sweet spot where simplicity and productivity meet. Tim identifies mayfly nymphs, caddis larvae, midges, and scuds in the aquarium and explains what they reveal about a stream. From samples, we learn about the health of a stream, what trout eat, where they live, and how to catch more.
