This past summer we spent a day fly fishing and fly tying with Signature Tyer Tom Rosenbauer. We started the morning filming Tom fishing up a small stream for brook trout and finished the day tying flies. While Tom enjoys catching a variety of species, the brook trout and streams of Vermont remain especially close to his heart. Throughout the film, Tom discusses where trout live and how best to catch them. He uses the water before him to illustrate a range of key topics that will help you locate and catch more trout, no matter the size of the stream.
Tom shares his approach and tactics for brook trout, along with how to read water and choose the best flies for each situation. Its easy to over complicate fly fishing, but Tom offers much-needed reminders throughout the film that everyone needs to hear. Tom gives thoughtful, philosophical insights on trout fishing that even the most experienced anglers will appreciate. No matter if you’re a seasoned angler or just beginning to learn how to fly fish, this video is for you.

Tying Flies with Tom
We are excited to bring to you our first tying tutorial with Tom! After our time on the water, we sat down with Tom as he demonstrated how to tie his signature fly patterns. Tom share his tips and tricks on how to tie one of our most popular terrestrial flies, Rosenbauer’s Rosenhopper. In the tying tutprial, Tom discusses the creation story of his Rosenhopper, its similarities and differences to the Chubby Chernobyl, and when and where the Rosenhopper excels.
Rosenbauer’s Rosenhopper is a great pattern if you like to fish big, bouyant dry flies. You will especially like this fly if you enjoy fishing hopper dropper rigs or blind fishing terrestrials when prospecting for trout. Not only does it imitate grasshopper really well, but it works when fish are eating stoneflies and a variety of other large insects on the water. Whether you fishing the tan Rosenhopper or prefer Tom’s purple variation on those darker days, the Rosenhopper is a must have dry fly that is not only fun to fish, but fun to tie as well.
