Fly Fishing Tutorials with Devin Olsen and Curtis Fry

Published: 7th May 2024 | Author: Fulling Mill

This spring we had the pleasure of traveling west and filming with Signature Tyer Devin Olsen in Wyoming, and Signature Tyer Curtis Fry in Utah on the Green River. There’s a lot of cool content we’ll be releasing from this trip, but here are the first two feature videos.

Best Euro Nymphs for Trout: Signature Tyer Devin Olsen Discusses Fly Design

For focused and dedicated competition angler like Signature Tyer Devin Olsen, every pattern has a purpose. In this video he dives into some of his flies and the purpose that each one serves. He talks about things like fly design principals, where and when he first tied them, why, how they’ve evolved over the years and how he fishes them. There are some great tips on how to fish them, and how to find success with them. As we were filming, a strong baetis (BWO or Blue Winged Olive) hatch started to come off. So, Devin was able to demonstrate just how effective his perdigon patterns are—especially on large, discerning, wild trout.

Fishing a Baetis (BWO) Hatch on the Green River With Signature Tyer Curtis Fry

In this video Signature Tyer Curtis Fry walks us through fishing a blue winged olive hatch on Utah’s Green River. It was an extremely windy day so the hatch took a while to pick up. So, Curtis started the session by fishing an indicator nymphing rig a few feet into the water column with one of his signature BWO emerger patterns, the Aerobaetis. He then switched things up and battled the wind to dry fly fish for them with BWO duns while explaining how to fish a long leader dry fly setup in heavy winds. Curtis also dives into the history behind some of his fly patterns—the Aerobaetis and the Foamerger—both of which were designed on the Green River. If you’re looking to fish baetis hatches this year, or if you’re into learning about fly tying and design, you’ll love this one!
