Spring Dry Fly Fishing for Trout | Signature Tyer Paul Procter
In this video, we follow Signature Tyer and renowned dry fly angler Paul Procter during a day of spring dry fly fishing for trout. Throughout the film, Paul radiates excitement to be back on the water after a long winter. That said, things rarely go as planned during spring fishing. We set out to capture a large dark olive hatch on film, but the hatch never fully materialized. Although the LDO hatch was a misfire, Paul thoughtfully demonstrates how you can make good out of an otherwise challenging day with a bit of flexibility and the right dry fly tactics.
During early spring, midges and large dark olives are a large part of a trout’s diet, but you also could encounter other hatches throughout the day, such as march browns. Because of this, having a dry fly box with a range of likely patterns is a must. Paul discusses his fly rod, line, leader, and tippet selection for the day, along with LDO and midge patterns, and how to put yourself into the best position to present the fly. Much of the film highlights the need to be stealthy when approaching rising fish, and Paul shares numerous tips on how to give yourself the best chances of presenting a fly to a feeding trout.

Patience Pays Off
While the trout were playing tough to get, Paul managed to outwit a few takers utilizing measured approaches. Whether you consider yourself a seasoned dry fly angler or are watching this to improve your game, there is a lot to learn for dry fly anglers of all levels. Paul is an excellent communicator on and off the water. This video is an excellent example of how spring trout fishing demands clever adjustments in order to find success.

Trout Fishing Tactics | Dry Dropper with Signature Tyer Pat Weiss
In this video, Signature Tyer Pat Weiss demonstrates how he fishes a dry dropper rig. Pat explains why it’s one of his favorite trout fishing tactics and shows how this approach is a great way to prospect water for your ability to fish two flies well at a distance. Dry dropper is simply one of the most fun ways you can fly fish. and Pat shares tips on when and where it excels. Even if fish aren’t willing to eat a dry fly, dry dropper tactics are optimal. It allows you to present a nymph at a distance and still have great strike detection thanks to the dry fly.
Signature Tyer Pat Weiss makes it clear throughout the video that this approach to fishing a dry dropper rig is distinct from the light-line, euro dry-dropper tactics that are growing in popularity around the world. He uses a floating fly line, 4wt rod, and while Pat doesn’t share all his secrets regarding his fly line and leader build, he shares tons of useful information on why a dry dropper approach is so effective.

The Takeaways
Pat explains how slack is an important factor in the system and how it allows a nymph to get to depth quickly, and drift at an ideal speed that induces strikes. It’s a true pleasure to watch Pat work through different water types and listen to his thought process. You’ll learn about where fish are located and how to identify which drifts they will take.
Throughout the video, Pat catches a bunch of wild brown trout on his now-famous BP Nymph underneath his Hi-Top Caddis. Both are extremely versatile, yet purpose-built. If you haven’t yet seen the Hi-Top Caddis fly tying tutorial with Pat, you should go give it a watch!
