The Best Flies and Techniques for Sea Bass: Insider Tips from 2024 Orvis Saltwater Festival Guides
Published: 21st August 2024 | Author: Fulling MillAs the countdown begins for the UK’s largest celebration of saltwater fly fishing, the Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival, some of the event’s expert guides share the best flies and techniques for sea bass. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a newcomer, these tips will help you gear up for success.
Andy Miller, Orvis Saltwater Festival Guide
For bass fishing in Chichester Harbour, my go-to saltwater fly is the orange and yellow Clouser paired with a floating line. This combination has consistently delivered results. It’s landed me a fair number of bass this year. While I haven’t hooked any giants yet, this setup has proven to be a reliable choice when bass are in the area. The smaller sizes seem to work particularly well. This is likely because the bass mistake them for small crabs, ragworm, and other prey.
With this year’s 2024 festival extending its boundaries further west towards the Hamble Rivera—and the added option for early dawn and late-night fishing—there’s potential for larger bass catches than in previous years. Will we see the 2022 festival record of a 70cm bass broken? Only time will tell!
Paul Bettley, Orvis Saltwater Festival Guide and Casting Instructor
A new and welcome addition to our guiding team this year, Paul Bettley brings a wealth of local knowledge and saltwater fly-fishing expertise. Paul is a qualified guide with the Angling Trust, and a casting instructor in training with FFI. He is also an instructor at Meon Springs Fishery and works with the Cancer and Pisces Trust.
Paul’s fly-fishing journey began with carp, pike, and bass, but his passion quickly gravitated toward saltwater fly fishing along the south coast. A master of understanding tides, winds, and coastal locations, Paul is a fountain of knowledge in the art of saltwater fly fishing.
Paul’s favourite Fulling Mill fly is the Popper Mylar in Blue & White. He’s all about top-water fishing for bass. This fly delivers the explosive surface action he loves.
Michael Rescorle, Saltwater Guide and Coach
Selecting a favourite fly is always a challenge. However, for saltwater fishing, my top choice is based on years of experience and success. I prefer wading in shallow water, so I need a light fly that stays in mid or upper water, casts smoothly with minimal risk of tail wraps, and requires few false casts. Durability and castability are also key factors for me.
The Softy Sandeel is my most successful, durable, and tangle-resistant fly. I catch countless bass with it every year. While colour isn’t a major concern, I find chartreuse to be particularly effective.
