ROW: New Competition Stillwater Flies for 2023

Read Time: 5 Minutes | Published: 6th February 2023 | Author: Fulling Mill

As part of our expanded stillwater range, Signature Tier Kieron Jenkins added a range of patterns that are all competition legal. An extremely successful competition angler, Kieron has kept these patterns close to his chest—and for good reason. Now, he’s decided to share them with us. You’re in for a treat with these new competition stillwater flies for 2023.

Jenkins’ Italian Job Booby

The Italian Job Sparkler Booby is a great pattern to fish later on in the season when fry are in abundance. Fish ir around weedbeds to mimic an injured fry. Or, fish it deep on sinking lines around drop-offs or jetties to target the bigger, better fish a lake has to offer. The coral and silver/gold sparkle mix is a great combination for both grown on fish and stockies. This pattern is available in both size 10 and size 12 allowing you to match the size of fry perfectly. Tied on Fulling Mill Barbless Hooks.

Jenkins’ Quill Buzzer

Quill buzzers are absolutely deadly for rainbow and brown trout all year round. Although they are most effective during the months of April, May and June where hatching buzzer are in abundance. The mix of natural stripped quill for the body, red holographic thorax and fluorescent yellow or orange cheeks is simply irresistible to any trout feeding on buzzers. The yellow is especially good when olive buzzers hatch. Fish this fly static on floating line, washing line or under the bung and your catch rate will rocket. This pattern is available in both size 10 and size 12 to help you best match the hatch during buzzer time.

Jenkins’ Cormorant Black Death

Cormorants are extremely effective fly patterns when fish have gone off the big stuff but are still up for a chase. They are a great pattern to use on a washing line, or in between two lures to provoke takes from following fish. The Black Death has been a popular fly on many stillwaters around the UK over the past 10 years. The black wing combined with a mirage body and fluorescent green head is just irresistible to trout. This pattern is available in both size 10 and size 12 giving you options to choose from. Tied on Fulling Mill Barbless Hooks.

Jenkins’ Sumo Hopper

When it comes to dry fly fishing, the Sumo Hopper is by far my most effective dry fly. Its tied with a loosely dubbed body and a slightly oversized hackle at the head to give a large profile on the surface. Trout sitting high in the water often take this fly intuitively. They also take it when they’re feeding on buzzer, beetle or daddy long legs. It’s super effective on large UK reservoirs such as Rutland and Chew Valley. However, it’s even more effective on high-altitude lakes such as Llyn Clywedog and Llyn Brenig where terrestrial insects are in abundance. The Jenkins’ Sumo Hopper is available in both size 10 and size 12 to help you best match the hatch. Tied on Fulling Mill Barbless Hooks.

Jenkins’ Gangly Cruncher

The Black Gangly Cruncher has more profile in the water, which allows it to be fished at a faster pace than your average nymph. The extra legs on these crunchers also make it a very versatile nymph pattern. It covers a wide range of fish food such as damsels, shrimps, olive nymphs, and hatching buzzer.

This black version is best fished in slightly coloured water around the margins of a lake, and is extremely effective for both stockies and grown on fish. Fish this fly on a dropper on a floating line or midge tip with the washing line technique for best effect.

A red holographic rib and head give this pattern a great target point. This natural version is best fished in clear coloured water around the margins of a lake, and is extremely effective for both stockies and grown on fish feeding on shrimp.

An olive UV hotspot gives this pattern an exciting target point, which really stands out in overcast conditions. This olive version is best fished in clear coloured water around the margins of a lake, and is extremely effective for both stockies and grown on fish feeding on damsel or olive nymphs.

The Jenkins’ Black Gangly Cruncher is available in both size 10 and size 12 to help you best match the hatch.

Jenkin’s Comp Fenton Booby

The Fenton Cat Booby has been super effective all across the country. It has been available in the larger size for a number of years and is still a best selling booby. This ‘competition’ legal version features the same great colour combination in a smaller size to fit the comp gauge. Fished at any depth, on any line, or with any retrieve this fly will definitely put fish in your net! The Jenkins’ comp size Fenton Cat is available in size 10 only. Tied on Fulling Mill Barbless Hooks.
