The Ultimate Dry Fly Hook – Product Review

Published: 23rd January 2020 | Author: Phillippa Hake

I’ve been using the Fulling Mill Ultimate Dry Fly hook for a good number of years now and it fast became my go-to barbless hook for both dry flies and many small nymphs. It’s a standard wire, down-eye barbless hook with a 1x wide gape, this allows you to use large hackles on flies such as Brook Dunns and March Browns, as well as large beads if used for nymphs. The Ultimate Dry Fly hook also comes in sizes 20 to 12, and as in my review of the Fulling Mill Jig hook, they come in the same tidy flip lid box, making for easy access and neat storage.

First of all, I love the shape of the hook. I tie pretty much all of my river dry flies on them form big buoyant sedges to the smaller, more delicate dries such as plume tips. Not only are they perfect for dries but they fully suit many styles of nymphs, just like the range of Perdigons available from Fulling Mill.

When fishing with these hooks I have found the Ultimate Dry Fly hooks hold fish extremely well; the long, soft rods we use whilst river fishing really cushion the points when striking into fish. The standard gauge wire has more than enough strength to securely hold fish up to 2lb in weight. If you haven’t already, give the UDF hook a go this season, you’ll be pleasantly surprised…
