Fly Fishing Video Series: The 2024 World Fly Fishing Championships in France
Read Time: 6 Minutes | Published: 30th March 2025 | Author: Fulling MillThere is a lot of mystery around the topic of competition fly fishing. As a company with many fly designers who compete, and with many flies that were designed through competition fishing, it was our opportunity to shed some light on the topic. So, we set to work. The results are now live on our YouTube channel. It takes the form of a 6 part fly fishing video series showcasing Signature Tyer Howard Croston and his journey to the World Fly Fishing Championships in France.

Fly Fishing at The Highest Level
This series takes a deep dive into fly fishing at the highest level with the most advanced tactics and fishing tackle available. Through Howard’s eyes, we took a close look into what it takes to become the best fly angler you possible can. At a level where the margins between winning and loosing are so fine, every little detail matters. And, in a space where those details matter, some of the best developments in the sport of fly fishing have occurred. As Howard shares in the series, a lot of fly fishing tactics used by pleasure anglers these days—on both stillwaters and rivers—were first used in competition. Think of it like Formula 1 racing and how that technology trickles down to the everyday cars we drive. It’s the exact same thing.

Thank You
Filming this series was a huge effort, and we want to extend our deepest thanks to those involved in making it happen. Of course, a huge thank you goes to Howard. None of this would have been possible without his patience and openness to this project. Thank you to Lucy Bowden-Croston for allowing us into your home and for being featured in the series. Thank you to all the members of Fly Fishing Team England for letting us film your practices and hang out with you during the competition. And, thank you to Devin Olsen and Fly Fishing Team USA for letting us do some filming with you, too. Lastly, thank you to FIPS Mouche for giving us press credentials and allowing us to film at the event.

Another huge thank you has to be extended to Patrick Tillard for filming and editing this series. Without his brilliant work and tireless effort none of this would have been possible. Patrick is a fantastic filmmaker and human. We’re grateful to be able to work with him on projects like these. You can check out his website and some of his other work, linked here.

Howard Croston’s Fly Patterns
Lastly, we’d also love to note that Howard has been a Signature Fly Tyer with us at Fulling Mill since 2019. He has dozens of patterns with us. They’ve been developed through decades of serious fishing around the world. They’re confidence flies that always have a place in his box, and ours now too. Believe us when we say that if a fly makes it into Howard’s fly box, it’ll make it into ours too. Many of his nymphs would be classified as euro nymph patterns, but don’t let that stop you from fishing them under an indicator or under a dry fly. For the most part, the term euro nymph is used to describe flies tied on a jig hook. How you fish them is totally up to you. Nymphs aside, we have some of Howard’s dry fly patterns, and streamer patterns too.

If you haven’t seen this video series yet, we’ve linked all of the episodes below.
We’d love for you to watch them. And, please share them with your fishing partners, too.
