Nymphing with Devin Olsen: Practice for the World Championships

Here, Devin will compete against Howard Croston of Team England and many other great anglers from 32 countries around the world. We recently released a video with Devin showing how he practices nymphing water types that he expects to encounter during the World Fly Fishing Championships. In the video, Devin dives into wading tactics, his rod and leader setups, and the skills he refines before an event.
About Devin Olsen
Devin Olsen started fly fishing at age 9. He started competing at age 19 and made Fly Fishing Team USA when he was 21 years old. Devin has competed in 13 consecutive World Fly Fishing Championships with Fly Fishing Team USA. Devin has earned a bronze individual medal and both silver and bronze team medals from these championships along with numerous medals from US competitions. In addition to his competition experience, he’s the owner of Tactical Fly Fisher. Devin has also produced three instructional films. They are Modern Nymphing: European Inspired Techniques, Modern Nymphing Elevated: Beyond the Basics, and Adaptive Fly Fishing. Finally, Devin is an author of two books: Tactical Fly Fishing: Lessons Learned from Competition for All Anglers and Stillwater Fly Fishing: Competition Inspired Strategies for Everyday Anglers. Devin is a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we’re honored to have him as a Fulling Mill Signature Tyer.
What to Expect in the Video
This video shows Devin in his element. While often quite serious behind the camera, this video highlights just how much fun Devin has while perfecting his craft. Devin practices micro leader euro nymphing, using both single nymph as well as dry dropper setups. A lot of the venues in the Czech Republic have fast, pocketed rivers. This water type suit euro nymphing tactics very well. Devin explains how he selects the right hook for his flies, as well as what goes into testing different hook models for his competition needs.
